browse thrift stores
When you’re looking for inexpensive, and ever-changing ideas to upgrade your living space, thrift stores are the perfect places to go. You can research decoration ideas, then browse several local shops to find cohesive pieces to fit your own style and theme. The fun thing about thrift stores is that their stock is constantly changing. One week you may find the perfect painting that adds an accent to your kitchen, while the next week you could stumble upon a comfortable armchair that will aid in creating a welcoming living room. Thrift stores offer unique new upgrades to your home, whether or not you’re looking to decorate on a budget.
window accents
A bare window is an instant buzzkill. Even cheap plastic shades can make a room feel less inviting. Adding flowing fabric curtains or a colorful shade to your windows helps a room to feel more polished and inviting. If you’re not sure what to buy, you can always go with a neutral shade to begin with. You can add an accent panel or curtain at a later point that has colors or patterns that complement the room you’re working on.
add a touch of color
Once your neutral base is decided for a room, mix in some splashes of color. This can be accomplished in many different ways. You could hang a fun painting, decorate with small statutes or pottery, place fun throw pillows on the couch, or purchase a bold rug. No matter what you do, stay consistent with your overall color theme and palette. Colors are fun, but too many colors in a confined space start clashing with each other and create an overwhelming experience.
wall galleries
Artwork is a conversation-starter among friends, family, and visitors. It also is one of the biggest things that will make an apartment feel like it is truly yours. Once again, you don’t want to overdo it, but adding several pieces of art to a room, or having a large gallery wall can really spice up an apartment. Find paintings and photographs that go together in a collage to uniquely represents who you are. If you’re the artsy type, you can frame several of your own pieces and hang them throughout your home. Or maybe you have a friend who is a great painter and wants to add some flair to your more drab rooms. If you’re on a budget, once again, thrift stores are great places to search since many thrift shops have artwork sections. As always, it’s a gamble if there will be anything good from one week to the next but eventually you’ll find a piece or two that really work for your decorative style.
let there be light
Having the perfect light source for a room really alters the feel of your space, and allows for a more homey vibe. Natural light is one of the best things you can have in your apartment, so keeping your windows free from too many obstructions is a necessity. For rooms without windows, or at night, adding accent lamps in strategic spots really help to create a comfortable mood. Avoiding bright and industrial lighting as much as possible will go a long way in making your apartment into your own inviting home. If you can easily change out your lighting fixtures, that is just one more fun decoration and personalization you will be able to add into your living quarters.
keep it clean
We all say we’re going to do the dishes, sweep the floor, wash the windows, and so on. But cleaning often gets put off because of our busy schedules. Setting a specific time each week to do cleaning tasks will help to keep you sane, and keep the dust and grime at bay. When you have a clean apartment, you’re more willing to invite others over, and you can feel as though your apartment is something to be proud of. The more often you clean, the easier it becomes. Not only will dirt not build up, but making cleaning part of your routine will just start to be the natural way you operate.
organize your possessions
In apartments, you don’t always have a ton of storage space, so making the most of what you have is a necessity. In your bedroom, you can make use of closet organizers for your clothing, shoes, and extra possessions. Having a home for everything will help you decrease clutter. Adding shelving, hooks, and door mounted organizers in any room possible will allow you more places to store and display your belongings. Make the most of your vertical spaces too! If you are able to put raise your bed a few inches with bed risers, there can be more storage space underneath it for larger boxes and bins. We’ve discussed organization and decluttering more deeply in past posts, so be sure to check those articles out for helpful tips that can save you space in your apartment!
furniture choices
When it comes to the pieces of furniture that you have in your apartment, you want them to be functional as well as decorative. In confined spaces like apartments, it is very important to prioritize the furniture you need. A couch is great, and armchairs help to facilitate company, but you don’t want so many chairs that your living room feels cramped. Whatever you decide, finding tables, chairs, couches, and more that coordinate with each other will help your space to feel inviting, and look beautiful.
